Hastings to consider banning smoking in public parks

Posted: 05/14/12 08:20

The Hastings City Council will meet tonight to consider a policy banning smoking in city parks. The proposed policy says smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco products would not be allowed in any city park or recreational facility, unless specifically designated and posted as smoking areas. The desire for a policy change was discussed first by the Hastings Mayor’s Youth Council. The policy prohibits smoking, when the second-hand smoke can be smelled or inhaled by others. The council will also hear a presentation from Connie Consbruck of South Central Nebraska Right to Life on Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, as the chamber is expected to be full of people that are in opposition, many of which, signed a petition earlier this year stating they do not want planned parenthood of the Heartland in the Hastings community.
